Noun [Asturian]

IPA: /ˈt͡ʃiɣɾe/, [ˈt͡ʃi.ɣɾe] Forms: chigres [plural], chígare [alternative, dialectal], chíguere [alternative, dialectal], tsigre [alternative]
Rhymes: -iɣɾe Etymology: Originally meaning corkscrew, uncertain, theories include an onomatopoeic origin or from English jigger, apparently starting out as a sailors' term (many English borrowings entered the language through maritime trade) or due to the device being imported from the United Kingdom, then with a similar evolution process as azucre (from earlier azúcare), cf. dialectal forms which might be earlier forms. First attested in 1827 in Gijón and apparently only expands into general usage in the early 20th century. Partially displaced tabierna. The word is not found outside of Asturias (apart from some border villages in León), where the word tabierna is still the general term.
